In short
- Figma's agent moved from beta to general availability in October 2026 and now draws on AI credits, per Figma's release notes and AI credit FAQ.
- Since March 2026, Full seats that run out of monthly AI credits lose paid AI features until the credits reset or an admin adds more, per Figma's community forum.
- At Config India in October 2026, code layers and Specs went into open beta on paid plans, per Figma's own announcement.
- Nielsen Norman Group found AI prototyping tools, Figma Make among them, produced weak hierarchy, poor contrast and inconsistent spacing; a Figma frame link gave the most accurate results.
- Figma's 2026 AI report, from a vendor survey of 8,403 responses, found designers taking part in development rose from 21% to 41% in a year.
In October 2026, Figma is a design tool with an AI agent built into the canvas, an app builder you prompt (Figma Make), and code on the canvas in open beta. The agent became generally available this month and now spends AI credits 12. Full seats have had hard limits on those credits since March 3. So if you are comparing any Figma course India offers this year, read it like this. Let the agent draft variations, fill in content and do bulk edits. Learn layout, components, variables, visual hierarchy and accessibility by hand, because that is where the agent's output goes wrong, and fixing it will be your job.
This is part 2 of a series. Part 1 was a staged path from graphic design into UX, covering what transfers and what does not; if you haven't read it, start there. This note is about the tool itself.
What changed, month by month
| When | What Figma shipped | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Mar 2026 | Admins can buy extra AI credits (subscription or pay-as-you-go); limits enforced on Full seats a week later 3 | Live |
| May 2026 | The Figma agent in Design: layout options, style variations, dark mode from your design system, bulk edits, comment summaries 4 | Closed beta, free |
| Jun 2026 (Config) | Figma Motion (timeline animation), custom shaders, Weave image tools inside Design, generative plugins; the agent opens to all paid plans 5 | Open beta |
| Aug 2026 | AI credit add-ons include more credits than before; the credits included with each seat did not change 2 | Live |
| Oct 2026 | The agent and Weave tools reach general availability, with library guidelines, file search, attachments and custom skills; usage now draws on credits 12 | GA |
| Oct 2026 (Config India) | Code layers and Specs in open beta; Payload backend scaffolding in Make; guidelines for published libraries; support for 20 new partner tools 6 | Beta / rolling out |
Three of these matter more than the rest.
The agent is now a paid feature, not a free trial. During the beta, using the agent did not consume credits. Since general availability it draws on the same budget as Make, and how many credits it uses depends on how complex the prompt is, what it does and how much context you give it 2. A designer who uses Make and the agent all day can run out before the month ends. On Full seats, paid AI features then stop until the reset or until an admin buys more 3. Work out early whether your team will pay for add-ons, because that decides how much of your day can lean on the agent.
Code is moving onto the canvas. Code layers let you turn a design frame into an interactive, code-backed prototype, import a GitHub repo, capture a live website or begin with a prompt 6. They are in open beta on paid plans, and Figma made creating and editing them free for an introductory period 6. Specs gives written intent and technical detail a home next to the design, for your team and for the agent 6. Prototyping no longer stops at linked frames.
Your design system now instructs the AI. Guidelines attached to a published library tell the agent how to use your components 6. The October release added design library guidelines and custom skills to the agent 1. A tidy, well-named library now affects what the agent produces. A messy one makes it worse.
Why India-based learners should pay attention
According to Figma's own announcement for Config India, India was its second-largest market by daily active users as of June 2026, and the Bengaluru event drew more than 30,000 registrations 7. The same post says a Hindi version of the product launched earlier in 2026 7. These are the vendor's own figures, published at its own event, so read them as Figma describing itself. What they do show is that features are now being launched in India, not just shipped here months later.
What a Figma course India offers should still teach by hand
The best evidence on where AI drafts fall short comes from Nielsen Norman Group. Its researchers gave AI prototyping tools, Figma Make among them, a real redesign brief and compared the results with work by their own designers 9. The tools could follow instructions towards a general goal, but the outputs had weak visual hierarchy, poor colour contrast, inconsistent spacing and related elements badly grouped. They also had a generic look, and sometimes used the wrong pattern altogether, such as reading "profile page" as a social-media profile 9. Detailed prompts helped. Attaching a Figma frame link gave the most accurate results 9. The study is from October 2025 (reviewed in August 2026), so it comes before the agent's general release, but those faults are the very things a reviewer checks.
That gives a fair split:
| Learn by hand first | Let the agent draft, then check |
|---|---|
| Auto layout, constraints and grids | Several layout options for one screen |
| Components, variants and variables | Bulk renaming, applying components at scale |
| Visual hierarchy and type scale | Placeholder copy and images for a prototype |
| Colour contrast and accessible states | A dark-mode pass using your existing tokens |
| Naming and structure of a library | Summaries of a long comment thread |
| Writing the spec: what this screen must do | First drafts of motion or a quick plugin |
The left column is what makes the right column usable. The agent works from your library and guidelines 16, and NN/G found that better inputs gave better outputs 9. If you cannot build a clean component with variables yourself, you will not spot when the agent has broken one.
How the job around Figma is shifting
Figma's 2026 AI report, based on 8,403 survey responses and 639 interviews across ten markets including India, found that designers taking part in development rose from 21% to 41% in a year, and developers taking part in design rose from 44% to 60% 8. Figma sells the tool, so these figures support its own story. Still, they match the releases above: code layers, Specs and the new partner connections all assume designers and developers working in the same file.
Figma also remains the default tool. In the independent UX Tools survey (1,478 responses, March–April 2026), Figma stayed the top weekly tool, and five of the top ten weekly tools were AI tools, with a general-purpose AI assistant second, used weekly by about half of respondents 10. That survey has commercial sponsors, some of them AI prototyping vendors, so treat it as directional.
What to do with this
- Get the fundamentals solid before the AI. Two weeks of building auto layout, components and variables by hand will pay off every time you review an agent draft.
- Treat every AI draft as a first draft. Check hierarchy, contrast, spacing and grouping, the four faults NN/G found 9, before you share it.
- Know your credit budget. Ask your admin which seat type you have and if the team has add-ons or pay-as-you-go turned on 23.
- Try code layers early. Turn one portfolio screen into a code-backed prototype while the beta is open 6.
This is the split TTFA's UI/UX Designer course is built on: a module on AI in the design workflow, alongside design systems, prototyping and accessibility done by hand.
The next note in this series is "User research on a budget: five methods, when each is wrong, and how to report what you found". It covers which method fits which question, where each one misleads you, and how to write up findings a product manager will act on.
Frequently asked questions
Is Figma's AI agent free?
Not any more. It was free during the beta, and since its general release in October 2026 it draws on the same AI credits as Figma Make 2. On Full seats, paid AI features stop when the monthly credits run out, unless an admin has added more 3.
Do I still need to learn Figma properly if the agent can design screens?
Yes. NN/G's tests found AI drafts with weak hierarchy, poor contrast and inconsistent spacing 9, and the agent depends on your library and guidelines 6. You need the skills to build those yourself and to catch its mistakes.
What are code layers in Figma?
They are code-backed, interactive prototypes on the canvas. You can make one from a design frame, a GitHub repo, a captured website or a prompt 6. They went into open beta at Config India in October 2026.
Which Figma plans get the agent?
At launch, the beta covered Professional, Organization and Enterprise plans, not Starter or Education 4. At Config 2026 it opened to all paid plans 5. Check your own plan's settings, as access can also depend on your seat type 4.
