In short
- foundit's tracker reported Marketing & Communications hiring up 22% year on year in July 2026 (and 27% in May), the strongest function that month, with budgets moving towards measurable acquisition.
- LinkedIn's fastest-growing jobs in India include Media Buyer (#6), Brand Strategist (#11) and Marketing Consultant (#22).
- The rising marketing skills LinkedIn names are prompt engineering, visual storytelling and performance analysis.
- "Digital marketing" as a general skill is table stakes; the hiring is in the parts you can prove with a dashboard.
If you work in marketing and are wondering what to learn next, the job trackers this year give an unusually clear answer.
The function that grew
foundit's Insights Tracker reported Marketing & Communications hiring up 22% year on year in July 2026, the strongest function that month, after a 27% rise in May 12. Its explanation is the part worth keeping: budgets moved "from brand-led spend towards measurable acquisition — performance marketing, analytics and content operations" 1. Naukri's JobSpeak reported the same function up 12% in June 5.
A caveat we owe you: the foundit and Naukri pages blocked our research tool, so those figures come from published summaries of the reports rather than from the pages themselves. Treat the exact percentages as approximate; the ranking of marketing as a strong function was consistent across sources.
The roles that are growing
LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 for India, built from job starts between January 2023 and July 2025, puts three marketing roles in the top 25: Media Buyer at number 6 (media buying, media planning, performance marketing), Brand Strategist at number 11, and Marketing Consultant at number 22 (content marketing, digital marketing) 3.
Look at the skills attached to the highest of the three. Media buying and performance marketing are jobs where every rupee spent has a number next to it the next morning. That is where the growth is.
The skills that are rising
LinkedIn's separate skills list names the marketing skills growing fastest in India: prompt engineering, visual storytelling and performance analysis 4. Two of the three are about making and reading numbers; the third is about using AI to produce the creative faster. None of them is "social media management".
What this means for what you learn
The honest version of "learn digital marketing" in 2026 is "learn the parts of digital marketing that produce a dashboard".
- Paid media, properly. Google Ads and Meta Ads from account structure to the weekly optimisation, on a live budget, so the numbers are real. Reading a campaign is a skill; running one is a different skill.
- Analytics you can defend. GA4 and Tag Manager set up by you, attribution you can explain, a report the founder actually reads.
- Content that has a job. SEO and email are still where cheap, compounding acquisition comes from, and both are measurable.
- AI in the workflow. Prompting for variants, briefs and first drafts; then judging them. The rising skill is the judging.
- One campaign you own end to end. Brief, creative, spend, results, and the post-mortem, in a document you can show.
That is the order our 360 Digital Marketing program runs in, and the reason every module ends in something with a number on it. Brand thinking still matters — Brand Strategist is on the list too — but it is easier to be trusted with brand once you have shown you can be trusted with budget.
What we don't know
We found no reliable public figures for the share of marketing roles that are performance versus brand, or for salary movement by specialism, that we would put our name to. Where a number was only a training provider's claim, we left it out.
