In short
- Indeed's India data shows data and analytics postings down 14% over three months, while Naukri's index shows white-collar hiring up 14% year on year and AI/ML hiring up 31%. They measure different things; together they say demand is moving, not vanishing.
- LinkedIn ranks Data & Analytics as the second fastest-growing skill stack in India, naming querying, database optimisation, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making.
- Workflow automation, API integration and LLMOps are on the same rising list. The analyst role is absorbing automation and AI, not being replaced by it.
- Employers now expect the tool, the SQL underneath it, and the ability to explain the result. Learn all three together.
Two headlines about analyst hiring came out within weeks of each other this year, and they seem to disagree. They don't, once you know what each one counts.
The mixed signal, explained
Indeed's Hiring Lab reported that Indian postings over the last three months fell 14% for data and analytics, 19% for software development and 20% for IT infrastructure, even as postings overall rose 7.4% year on year 1. Naukri's JobSpeak index for August 2026 reported white-collar hiring up 14% year on year, with AI/ML hiring up 31% and fresher hiring up 15% 2.
Indeed is looking at a three-month change on its own platform. JobSpeak counts new listings on Naukri against a year earlier. Different windows, different platforms. The reasonable reading is that generic "data analyst" listings have cooled while anything with AI in the title is growing fast — and that the two are increasingly the same job with a different description.
The Naukri figure reached us through a secondary report; the primary source is Info Edge's monthly PDF 2. We cite it because the direction matches what we hear from hiring managers, but check the PDF before you quote the number.
What the skills lists say
LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India ranks Data & Analytics second among five fastest-growing skill stacks. The skills it names inside that stack are worth reading slowly: querying, database optimisation, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making 3.
Notice what that list is not. It is not "Power BI" or "Tableau". The tool is assumed. What is rising is the layer under it (SQL that performs) and the layer above it (explaining the result to someone who has to act on it).
The same list puts workflow automation, LLMOps, AutoML and API integration among India's fastest-growing skills 3. That is the other half of the modern analyst job: the report should build itself, and the analyst should be able to wire an AI step into it.
TeamLease Digital's FY2025-26 primer names GenAI, cloud, cybersecurity and data engineering as its priority areas, and it does mention Power BI and Tableau by name as the BI tools employers ask for 4. It is a staffing-firm report without an exact publication date on the page, so again: directional.
Where the roles are, by LinkedIn's count
LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 for India — built from job starts between January 2023 and July 2025 — has Software Engineer at number 3, with SDLC, microservices and Kubernetes as its top skills, and Manager of AI at number 4, listing MLOps 5. Analytics does not appear as a standalone title in the top 25. That is consistent with the skills list: analytics is spreading into other roles rather than standing alone.
One caution. Some summaries of that list mention a "Business Analyst (AI-enabled)" role. It is not in LinkedIn's published top 25, so we don't repeat it.
What this means if you are learning now
Put the two lists together and the job description for 2026 reads like this:
- SQL that holds up on real tables. Joins, window functions, and queries that don't fall over on ten million rows. "Database optimisation" is on the rising list because slow reports get noticed.
- One BI tool, properly. Power BI or Tableau, from the data model to the published dashboard, not just the visuals.
- A way to automate the boring part. A scheduled refresh, a workflow, a small script — whatever removes the Monday copy-paste.
- An AI step you can defend. Using Copilot in Power BI or an LLM call in a pipeline is now ordinary. Being able to say what it did and check it is what separates you.
- Storytelling. The three-minute version of the dashboard for the person who will make the decision.
That is also, not by accident, how we sequence our data programs: SQL first, then the tool, then automation, then the AI layer, with a project at each step that you can show.
What we could not find
We looked for credible data on Power BI versus Tableau demand in Indian job ads and found only training-provider blogs, so we make no claim about which is asked for more. We also found no usable public data on demand for Alteryx skills in India. If you have seen good numbers on either, tell us.
